5, 6, 7 or 8
Other than a pair of 2s, a 5 is the lowest
two-card total a player can possibly have. Therefore
they have no option in this scenario other than to hit
no matter what up-cards the dealer is showing. By taking
another card, there is no way that a player can bust.
The only way a player can hope to win with these weak
totals is by waiting for the dealer to go bust.
To be successful at Blackjack it is vital
that a player learn all of the Basic Strategy plays
thoroughly. Remember that Basic Strategy has evolved
in a bid to gain an advantage over the house. This advantage
is minimal and can only be used for financial gain unless
played to the letter. As little as a 5% divergence from
the Basic Strategy will ensure that the odds are back
with the casino. A player should never rely on luck,
intuition or hunches, and should stick doggedly to the
given mathematical proofs.
