Dealing down
One real-world rule variation that every
player should be aware of is that of “dealing
down”. In shoe games the player receives their
cards face up and is not permitted to touch them.
If, however, the dealer is able to hold all of the
cards used, the player’s first two cards will
be dealt face down, but they must then be picked up
using only one hand.
If the player wishes to hit they must lightly brush
them towards themselves upon the table’s surface.
If a player goes bust, or decides to surrender, then
they must toss their cards face down toward the dealer.
If a player wishes to stand, they must slide their cards
face down underneath their wager.
A player may double down by placing an equal value
of chips in the betting box, behind their original wager,
and again placing their cards face down underneath it.
The player then receives their additional card. Usually
it is up to the dealer to expose this card, but if curiosity
gets the better of the player then they may examine
it themselves first.
A player may split, by spreading their pair face up,
and placing an equal amount of chips behind the second
card in order to form two separate hands.
Players may find the rules at tables which deal down
slightly more restrictive than those of their adjacent
shoe games at different tables.
Many casinos do not allow players to double after
splitting, and when playing single or double deck games,
the surrender option may be withdrawn.
The serious players i.e., counters would do well to
consider both the drawbacks and benefits of playing
double down games as the stakes and betting limits are
often much higher.
