Blackjack rule variations

Spanish 21

Spanish 21 is viewed by some players as something of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. At first glance the game appears heavily weighted in favour of the player.

However, unbeknownst to many novice players, all the 10s have been removed from the decks, making it difficult, and in some cases impossible to reach 21. All the face cards still remain in the pack, however. In this Blackjack mutation, all the traditional rules still apply.

In addition:

1. There is no pushing. If a player reaches 21 they are paid out immediately, even if the dealer also has 21.

2. Players may create up to four separate hands from their original one and may split cards of equal value (including Aces). In addition, a player may hit and double on such hands.

3. A dealers Blackjack is always beaten by a players blackjack and the player is paid off at the usual 3 to 2 ratio.

4. Players may double their bet and hit as many times as they wish even after splitting.

5. By using a technique known as “double-down rescue,” a player who is unhappy with the final draw of the hand may take back the amount they placed when doubling and then surrender, thereby losing only the original portion of their wager.

6. Both the surrendering and insurance options apply as normal in Spanish 21.

7. If a player reaches 21 with a combination of five, six or seven cards they are paid at a rate of 3 to 2, 2 to 1 and 3 to 1 respectively.

8. If a player reaches 21 with a hand that consists of a 6, 7 and 8 they are paid out a ratio of 3 to 2, 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 respectively depending on whether the cards are of mixed suit, the same suit or all Spades.

9. Many casinos offer players of Spanish 21 an additional super bonus if the player receives three 7s of the same suit when the dealers up-card is also a 7. If the player has placed a bet of $25 they will receive $5000 while the remaining players receive an envy bonus of $50 each. If the player has bet only $5 they will receive $1000 and no envy bonus shall be paid.
